Building on qualitative datasets and participatory processes to simulate land use change in a mountain watershed of Northwest Vietnam

چکیده
In this article we investigate if qualitative soil fertility datasets derived during participatory processes can be combined with a corresponding land use change model (i) to improve the understanding of the socialecological complexity of land use change and (ii) to allow testing of alternative scenarios even in datapoor environments. To test this hypothesis, a participatory assessment approach was combined with the spatially explicit, soil fertility driven FALLOW (Forest, Agroforest, Low-value Landscape Or Wasteland?) model. For a case study village in Northwest Vietnam, participatory evaluations with two age groups of farmers were employed in an iterative way to derive qualitative and quantitative model input data to test scenarios of current and improved management on upland soil fertility evolution with FALLOW. The indigenous colour-based soil quality classification was successfully integrated into the Trenbath FALLOW soil module. The model baseline scenario was validated by calculating the goodness-of-fit of model outputs with land cover maps (Ft 0.78) from remote sensing. Model scenario analysis suggested a masking effect of ongoing soil fertility decline by use of fertilizers and hybrid crop varieties, indicating a resource overuse that becomes increasingly irreversible without external interventions. Simulations further suggest that success of introduction of improved cropping management methods becomes less effective with increasing soil degradation and cannot fully restore initial soil fertility. We conclude that the coupled semi-quantitative approach is useful at the village level as it generated meaningful insights into local land use change dynamics without the need for long-term and data-intensive studies. 2011 Elsevier Ltd. متن کاملAn Evaluation of the Optimal Change Scenarios of Land Use and their Impacts on the Hydrological Parameters: A Case Study of Dinevar Watershed
EXTENDED ABSTRACT The land use change of watersheds has entailed many impacts on the processes of erosion and sediment yield over the time, and has caused the loss of soil quality and fertility. On the other hand, an increase in the sediment generation and its accumulation would reduce the capacity of the reservoirs. In this respect, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects o...
متن کاملPerformance comparison of land change modeling techniques for land use projection of arid watersheds
The change of land use/land cover has been known as an imperative force in environmental alteration, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. This research was mainly aimed to assess the validity of two major types of land change modeling techniques via a three dimensional approach in Birjand urban watershed located in an arid climatic region of Iran. Thus, a Markovian approach based on two suit...

متن کاملApplication of Remote Sensing in Assessing Land Use Changes in Haraz Watershed
Aims: Land-use change due to human activities is one of the important issues in regional and development planning. The aim of this study was to detect land-use changes using Landsat TM, ETM+, IRS and ASTER satellite imagery. Methodology: In this quasi-experimental study, land-use changes in the Haraz watershed over a 23-year period were evaluated. For this study, images of 1992 TM, ETM + 2002, ...
